Roland Tec brief bio

In the Spring of 2020, recognizing an acute need for playwrights and screenwriters to master the art of monologue in order to stay connected to audiences during Pandemic Pause, Roland Tec founded the Hear Me Out New American Monologue Competition & Labor Day Fest. Now entering its third year, the competition continues to draw hundreds of submissions from script writers all over the world and as of October, 2021 has recognized dozens of writers with prizes including cash totalling more than $17,000. The competition call for entries is announced on Mother’s Day each year and winners are announced at the Labor Day Festival.

I worked with Roland Tec during New Opera Theatre Ensemble’s residency at Harvard. As a singer-actor, it was fascinating to open our improvisational developmental process to lay people. Roland’s wildly imaginative approach helped break down barriers to opera for audiences who otherwise might never have been inclined to consider music-theatre of any kind. It was a great wild ride performing as a NOTE ensemble member, something I’m still grateful for having experienced to this day.

Roland has directed me in his film, WE PEDAL UPHILL, and in two Off-Broadway plays. He’s a fantastic director and writer. I’m an actor and he’s simply wonderful to work with. He knows what he’s looking for in the scene, yet allows the actor much freedom and creativity.
